South American duo ease to wins

South American rivals Chile and Uruguay both enjoyed comfortable friendly victories over Zambia and Israel respectively.

Marcelo Bielsa's Chile, who are grouped with Spain, Honduras and Switzerland at the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ next month, started slowly but made a second-half improvement through two of their star players to beat Zambia 3-0. Young winger Alexis Sanchez, starting from the bench for a change, made the breakthrough in the 52nd minute. With the African minnows' goal breached, Sanchez eventually made it 2-0 six minutes from time before, two minutes later, former captain Jorge Valdivia put further gloss on the scoreline.

Fellow finals qualifiers Uruguay, meanwhile, were more impressive in overcoming Israel 4-1. Diego Forlan (14') put the South Americans in front only for Lior Rafaelov to level just before the half-hour mark. However, goals by Alvaro Pereira (36') and a double in the last six minutes from veteran striker Sebastian Abreu secured what proved to be a comfortable night's work. Chilean striker's joy turns to despair

Chilean striker Hector Mancilla's joy at winning the Mexican league title with Toluca on Sunday turned to 2010 FIFA World Cup heartbreak on Monday when he was informed he had been cut from the finals squad by coach Marcelo Bielsa. Mancilla said he had been told by Bielsa, who coached Argentina at the 2002 World Cup finals and to the 2004 Olympic gold medal, that he had been left out for footballing reasons leaving the coach with just one more player to cut before finalising his 23-man squad.

The striker had complained recently of being left out of the loop with regard to whether he was going to South Africa for the finals, which run from 11 June to 11 July. Chile are in Group H along with Honduras, Switzerland and European champions Spain. Chile World Cup Tickets are available online. Bielsa axes five

Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa has dropped five players from his provisional FIFA World Cup squad following their 1-0 friendly defeat to Mexico yesterday.

All five players are midfielders with Manuel Iturra (Universidad de Chile), Pedro Morales (Dinamo Zagreb), Jaime Valdes (Atalanta) and Colo Colo duo Charles Aranguiz and Jose Pedro Fuenzalida all deemed surplus to requirement.

Iturra's exclusion comes after he was sent off just two minutes after coming on as a substitute in yesterday's defeat to El Tri in Mexico City. Bielsa has now reduced his squad to 25 players with two more to miss out when the final lists are named on 1 June.

Chile play their opening match of the FIFA World Cup finals against Honduras on 16 June. Chile see off T&T

Chile strolled to a 2-0 victory over Trinidad and Tobago in a friendly international in Iquique. Pedro Morales got the hosts off to the perfect start when he fired them in front seconds into the game and Sebastian Toro doubled Chile's lead three minutes after the interval.

Marcelo Bielsa fielded a team made up only of domestic players and, with the FIFA World Cup around the corner, many boosted their chances of making it to South Africa. Chile's next and final friendly before this summer's tournament is on May 16 against Mexico. Universidad close in on quarters

A goal by Diego Rivarola five minutes from the final whistle gave Universidad de Chile a key win in Peru over hosts Alianza Lima in the first leg of their Copa Libertadores last 16 encounter.

Alianza dominated possession from the first minute but they were unable to create any clear-cut chances. The best ones in the first half were in Universidad's counter-attacks - a shot by Juan Manuel Olivera that came back off the crossbar in the 27th minute, and one minute later Jose Contreras missed the chance after beating the Peruvian goalkeeper.

In the second half Alianza - who have not lost a game at home in the tournament - continued with their pressure on the visitors' goal but visiting goalkeeper Miguel Pinto was equal to their best efforts. Just as a goalless draw looked on the cards, the Alianza defence were caught napping and Rivarola took advantage to score the winning goal.

Universidad coach Gerardo Pelusso said: "We beat one of the best teams from the group stage, who are even stronger at home. We have to win the second leg, we don't see football in any other way. We always want to win." A victory or any draw in Chile next week will give Universidad passage to the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, in Brazil, a hat-trick by Thiago Ribeiro gave Cruzeiro a 3-1 win over Uruguay's Nacional. The hosts took a three-goal lead in the first half but in the second they could not continue with that rhythm and the Uruguayans cut the deficit to give them a glimmer of hope for the second leg.

Thiago Ribeiro scored his first goal in the seventh minute, taking advantage of a defensive mistake, and doubled Cruzeiro's advantage with a header. In the 41st minute, Henrique provided the assist for the striker to complete his hat-trick. Nacional played much better in the second half and Mario Regueiro pulled one back to provide a little more intrigue to the return leg in Montevideo.

Finally, in Colombia, Once Caldas had to settle for a goalless draw against Paraguay's Libertad. Chile World Cup Tickets are available online. Chile seek to make impact

Mark Gonzalez says Chile want to make a name for themselves at this summer's World Cup.

Chile return to the finals this year for the first time since 1998 after an impressive qualification campaign under Marcelo Bielsa.

And CSKA Moscow midfielder Gonzalez says they have to perform to their potential this summer to show the country deserves the chance to compete with the global elite.

"First of all, our national team wants to justify our mere arrival in South Africa," he told Sport Express. "But I do not only want us to participate - I also want us to make a name for ourselves.

"Our primary task is to advance beyond the group stage and then we will see how things go.

"Nobody expects it to be easy - we are in a group with Spain after all - but we need to focus on our own performance and our opponents'. I think Switzerland and Honduras also think this way, and that makes the World Cup even more interesting."

He added: "I must play well with CSKA if I am to perform at the World Cup. At the moment, I am viewing every training session and every match as preparation for the tournament."

Colo Colo face uphill task

Chilean giants Colo Colo claimed a 3-2 away win over Venezuela's Deportivo Italia, but their chances of reaching the Copa Libertadores Round of 16 are slim. Ezequiel Miralles scored twice for Hugo Tocalli's side, who should have won by a wider margin in a competition where goal average is important in order to progress.

Emerson Panigutti surprisingly put the hosts ahead in the 15 minute as he cleverly backheeled in a Felix Casseres cross from the left. However, Cristian Bogado headed an equaliser from Miralles cross 11 minutes later, before Argentinian-born Miralles gave Colo Colo the lead with a bicycle kick in the 38th minute.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Jose-Pedro Fuenzalida helped an unmarked Miralles make it 3-1. The player had a chance for a hat-trick in the 73rd minute - but Jose-Carlo Fernandez saved his penalty. Richard Blanco reduced the deficit with an 86th-minute penalty for the already-eliminated Venezuelan side.

Colo Colo coach Tocalli still believes it is possible. He said: "I won't give up yet. I only will after the final whistle. Why can't we score four goals against Cruzeiro? They are just another football team."

Elsewhere in Lima, Peruvian giants Universitario failed to take control of Group Four as they could only manage a goalless draw against already-eliminated Blooming of Bolivia. Universitario drew level with Paraguay's Libertad on nine points, but are below them due to goal difference. The qualifiers will be established on 15 April, with both teams and Argentina's Lanus having the chance to progress.

Rodriguez denies Flamengo

Matias Rodriguez's last-gasp goal gave Universidad de Chile a point against Brazilian giants Flamengo to enable them to maintain the leadership in Group 8.

The Chilean side drew 2-2 at the Maracana to stay top after four rounds with eight points, one more than Flamengo and four more than their compatriots Universidad Catolica.

Universidad attacker Walter Montillo broke the deadlock with a close range header just before half-time, then Vagner Love set up Michel for a second half equaliser. Leo Moura gave Flamengo the lead but midfielder Rodriguez made sure Gerardo Pelusso's men got the draw in injury-time with a strong shot from inside the box.

In Group 1, Colombian side Independiente Medellin saw off ten-man Paraguay side Cerro Porteno 1-0. Striker Luis Arias got the only goal of the game, shortly after failing to beat goalkeeper Ezequiel Medran from the penalty spot in the 55th minute. Things got worse for Cerro when midfielder Rodrigo Burgos was dismissed midway through the second half.

Medellin reached the six-point mark after five games and remain third, one point behind Uruguayan Racing and four below Brazilian side Corinthians. Peru's Alianza Lima defeated Bolivia's Bolivar 1-0 to climbed to the summit in group three after five rounds.

Striker Jose Fernandez settled the match early on with a header, meaning Gustavo Costa's side lead their group with 12 points, two more than reigning champions Estudiantes. Chile climbing mountains

Chile have enjoyed a remarkable upturn in fortunes since Marcelo Bielsa took over as national coach in August 2007. Absent from the big stage since France 1998, La Roja qualified in fine style for the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™, finishing second in the South American Zone, just a point behind Brazil.

Not surprisingly, that achievement has resulted in a steady climb of the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, where the Chileans now stand 14th, their highest position in nearly 12 years.

The last time Chile stood so close to the top ten was in September 1998, when they rose to 12th. And it was in April that year that the South Americans achieved their all-time high of sixth. Since then, however, it has been mostly downhill, with the Chileans dropping as low as 84th in December 2002.

Although signs of a recovery came under Bielsa’s predecessor Nelson Acosta, it was the appointment of man they call El Loco that proved the catalyst for Chile’s emergence from the doldrums. Bielsa building bridges

A few months after moving to Chile to become the national team coach, or so the story goes, Marcelo Bielsa decided to buy a car. Heading along to a showroom, the Argentinian picked out an old make now used only by taxi drivers, the type of car he once drove in Mexico during his time in charge at Atlas and America. The showroom owner told him a new model was now available, with no frills or fancy trimmings. Known for his taste for the understated things in life, Bielsa accepted the owner’s offer and drove away with his unremarkable new purchase, which, thanks to him, has since become one of the best-selling cars in Chile.

That anecdote is typical of the man they call El Loco and underlines the impact he has had in his adopted homeland since guiding the national team back to the FIFA World Cup™ finals for the first time in 12 years. The manner in which they achieved qualification, finishing second in the South American Zone behind Brazil and playing some exciting, attacking football in the process, has brought further praise Bielsa’s way. All that remains to be seen now is whether he can earn the kind of adulation that the people of Korea Republic lavished on Dutch tactician Guus Hiddink after their run to fourth place at Korea/Japan 2002.

Kiwis to meet Chile in warm-up

New Zealand will play Chile in a training match in the lead up to their opening match in the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa in June.

The game on 9 June - six days ahead of New Zealand's FIFA World Cup opener against Slovakia - would likely be played behind closed doors in three 30 minute spells, New Zealand Football said on Tuesday.

"I think we've got some really good fixtures lined up leading into our arrival in South Africa so something a bit more informal will be an ideal opportunity to finalise our build-up," New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert said.

"We may tinker with positions and personnel, but we aim to be heading into the opening game against Slovakia with all those bases covered and players fully aware of what they need to do."

New Zealand Football also said New Zealand and Australian players will go into a camp from 28 April to 10 May before the South Africa 2010 squad of 23 is named.

The All Whites, who have qualified for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1982, will play friendlies against Australia, Serbia and Slovenia in late May and early June on the way to South Africa. Chilean football on the recovery trail

On 27 February 2010, Chile was hit by a massive earthquake that measured 8.8 on the Richter scale, one of the most powerful in recorded history. Concepcion, a town halfway down the country’s elongated coastline, had the misfortune of being closest to the epicentre.

At the time of writing, over 700 people are believed to have lost their lives to the catastrophe and 1.5 million homes have been destroyed. But less than two weeks after the disaster, Chilean football is already making great efforts to get back on its feet.

“I’m here to offer my personal, heartfelt thanks to the FIFA President and the entire football fraternity for their tremendous solidarity and generosity,” said Harold Mayne-Nicholls, President of the Chilean Football Association (ANFP), who was in Zurich today for discussions with FIFA President Joseph S. Blatter.

The damage to the South American nation was considerable, particularly in the VII Maule and VIII Biobio regions in the heart of the country, with estimates of rebuilding costs varying between two and three billion US dollars. Football was affected, but only suffered material losses, as Mayne-Nicholls pointed out: “I visited the Maule and Biobio regions last week – they were badly hit. We have eight professional clubs within these regions."

"But I must say that our overriding feeling is one of relief, because we do not appear to have lost anyone from the football family. Some players did lose their homes, however, and we will help them to rebuild. In the same vein, office buildings belonging to certain clubs collapsed – in Concepcion and Talca, for example – and we will offer our help there too."

Football rallying round
“Some stadiums experienced considerable damage; the home of Naval, the club from Talcahuano that plays in our country’s second tier, is one such example," said the head of the ANFP.

"On top of that, clubs in the Biobio region are unable to train because they simply don’t have basic amenities such as running water or electricity. All the league matches involving teams from this area have been postponed until the clubs are up-and-running again.”

The entire football world has stood up to be counted in the wake of the catastrophe, offering financial assistance and other forms of support. “Last weekend, a country-wide telethon was held – FIFA donated 250,000 US dollars, as did the Chilean national team, while CONMEBOL gave 100,000 dollars, which was matched by Chilean clubs. Altogether, the football family managed to collect some 800,000 dollars,” said Mayne-Nicholls.

"But let me be very clear – money is not the most important aspect. Of course we are in need of funds to rebuild, but what has really inspired us most of all is the spirit of solidarity shown by the football community."

"We have been touched by initiatives run by clubs such as Almeria, West Bromwich Albion, Palmeiras, and numerous Argentinian and Mexican teams. As well as by the gesture made by Real Madrid in their match against Sevilla, by seeing Chilean flags flying at matches in Italy, by the minute of silence instigated prior to the recent France-Spain friendly and by so many other demonstrations of support. We have received hundreds of letters from friends, other football associations and clubs, from all over the world.”

Chilean football shows solidarity

Chilean football has temporarily come to a halt in the wake of the terrible earthquake that recently brought devastation and tragedy to many parts of the country.

The disaster has led to the suspension of the national Apertura championship, the cancellation of last Wednesday’s 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ warm-up matches between La Roja and Korea DPR and Costa Rica, and the closure of several stadiums around the country due to serious structural damage.

The Chilean football family, many members of which experienced the earthquake at first hand, has been spurred into action, however, responding to the crisis en masse and demonstrating its heartfelt support and solidarity.

'Everything started to shake'
The earthquake, which measured 8.8 on the Richter scale, proved a terrifying experience for Juan Antonio Pizzi, the Argentinian coach of Santiago Morning and a former striker with Barcelona, Tenerife and his adopted Spain.

“I was asleep and all of a sudden everything started to shake,” he says, recalling the dramatic events of Saturday 27 February. “After another 20 seconds the electricity went, there was this terrible noise and everything started falling over. It was deafening and I was lying there thinking ‘What’s coming next?’ It went on and on and I just curled up in a corner of the room and waited.”

"I took them in my arms and, as there were bits of ceiling falling on top of us, I decided to jump from the fourth floor." (Ruben Dario Gigena, Santiago Wanderers forward).

Well after getting qualified for the World cup 2010 Chile management has made several changes to their strategies. Chile fans can get Chile world cup tickets online.

Football in Chile: History

Football was first brought to Chile by the British that exhibited the sport during visits to the commercial ports such as in Valparaiso. Chileans living in the area would watch how the sport was being played. In 1880 Chilean aristocratic families incorporated the sport into their regular rituals which brought the first games in Chilean football. This occurred within the confines of the British school called Mackay y Sutherland de Cerro Alegre in Valparaiso.

Chile's oldest club was founded in the port of Valparaiso, and it was named Valparaiso Football Club. The governing body of Chilean football Federación de Fútbol de Chile was established in 1895. Chile was one of the founding members of CONMEBOL which launched the first South American international championship now known as the Copa America.

Other important factors that helped the sport of football spread in Chile were the club tours from other nations, such as Argentina and Peru, held in Chile. Furthermore, the first South American tournaments aided in making Chile a better force in the world of association football. By the time the 1930 FIFA World Cup took place in Uruguay, Chile gave a decent performance but was not able to reach the second round due to losing to Argentina and thus getting second place. The next major step in the international arena took place in the 1962 FIFA World Cup which was held in Chile, and a series of interesting stories were built around the victories of the Chilean team that brought the country joy after the terrible earthquake that had deeply hurt the nation. Although Chile did not win, the team was able to obtain third place in the competition.

Currently, Chilean football remains a strong force in Latin America. Colo-Colo has been the only Chilean club to win a Copa Libertadores championship while other clubs such as Cobreloa, Unión Española and Universidad Católica have played finals finishing in second place, keeping the eagerness of the viewers ticket4football.com provides football fans with the facility to get Chile World cup tickets and football tickets for other soccer events online.

Chilean Football Federation

The Football Association of Chile (FAC) was founded, after a meeting in Valparaiso on June 19, 1895, and is headed by a journalist David Scott. This organization was a pioneer in terms of football organization in Chile, but with a very limited scope. It came into conflict with the Federación Sportiva Nacional, the national institution created in 1909 to protect the sports in the country.

Having Hispanicized its name to Asociación de Football de Chile, FAC achieved affiliation to FIFA provisionally in 1913 and fully in 1914. In 1916, during the competition of the first Copa América, CONMEBOL was founded with Chile as one of the founding members, besides the Confederação Brasileira de Desportos (CBD), Asociación Argentina de Football (AAF) and Asociación Uruguaya de Fútbol (AUF).

In 1917, the disputes with the Federación Sportiva Nacional were resolved. But in the early twenties, there appeared the Federación de Football de Chile located in Santiago, which, in October 1923, took the continental football national representation, before the retreat of the Asociación de Football de Chile from the CONMEBOL in order to form a parallel confederation. Faced with this situation, FIFA removed Chile in 1925.

This vital removal forced quick solutions, and on January 24, 1926, the Federación de Football de Chile merged with the Asociación de Football de Chile, thus creating a single entity which rose to be the sole governing body of Chilean football. After the unification, the newly formed organization remained the name of "Federación de Football de Chile" and based in Valparaiso. It was recognized by CONMEBOL in April and, on a temporary basis, by FIFA in July.

The Federación de Fútbol de Chile registered its 1954 candidacy for hosting the 1962 World Cup. On June 10, 1956, as part of FIFA's Executive Congress in Lisbon, Portugal, Chile was elected with 32 votes in favor to be the host of FIFA World Cup 1962, while Argentina received 10 votes and 14 members voted blank.

On August 15, 2006, the Federación de Fútbol de Chile presented its candidacy to the Executive Committee of FIFA to host the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup, 2008, the fourth edition of the tournament. The committee resolved on September 15, 2006 granting the organizing right to the Chilean Federation and it will be the first FIFA Women's World Cup, no matter what ages, to be held in South America.

On 10 October 2009, Chile qualified for the 2010 World Cup with a 4-2 away win against Colombia. At the end of the qualification they eventually finished in second place, ahead of Paraguay on goal difference following the latter's defeat to Colombia. 1928 Summer Olympics

The 1928 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the IX Olympiad, was an international multi-sport event which was celebrated in 1928 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Amsterdam had bid for the 1920 and 1924 Olympic Games, but had to give way to war-victim Antwerp, Belgium and Pierre de Coubertin's Paris, respectively. The only other candidate city for the 1928 Games was Los Angeles, which would host the Olympics four years later.

The United States Olympic Committee measured the costs and revenue of the 1928 Games in preparation for the 1932 Summer Olympics. The committee reported a total cost of US$1.183 million with receipts of US$1.165 million for a loss of US$18,000 - much less than that of the previous Games.
